History of PSA Posters

on

While prepping for our upcoming PSA animated poster, I wanted to learn more about the history of PSA posters: how they developed and they are used today. I loved how this site started off the topic with talking about posters prior to those for PSA.. how the targeted audience were literate, active in absorbing new information, and affordable to pay for posters: “you had to make the effort to gain access to that ad. Magazines don’t just hit you in the face; you have to go out, buy one, and turn the pages.” As the government and other organizations took interest in informing wider range of public, the poster developed to be more focused on image and quick with message telling. PSA posters developed greatly during the World Wars and continued to proliferate as science started to emphasize the need to educate the public with health actions. They are still long-lived as digital culture has allowed for new platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I can’t wait to see how they will develop to be in the future as technology continues to advance and more social issues rise to the surface (i.e. BLM, Anti-Asian American Hate Crime).
