The Accessible Icon Project

From listening to Susan Kare’s talk on iconography to applying what I learned about icon design to my Speculative Design Manual, a concept that didn’t cross my mind was activism. The Accessible Icon Project was launched to introduce icons that portray people with disabilities in a new light–dynamic and in motion–to provoke questions and discussion that address issues around inclusivity. The project spans beyond a graphic design project and bridges design and activism together, beginning as a concept and branching out into a street art campaign that inspired talks of the politics of disability. It’s incredible to see the global impact and conversations that can be sparked from a single icon.
