Google: Aesthetics over Accessibility

After our discussion in class last week about bad design, and the video with the iconographer, I was reminded of Google’s icon redesign for its suite of apps late last year. The iconographer in charge of the redesign clearly favored aesthetics over functionality to the point where many users complained that the icons on their desktop looked too similar for them to quickly differentiate. This raises the question of can design go too far and when is the tradeoff of function worth the gained aesthetics?
