Tom White: How Machines See the World

In our discussion/lecture of abstraction in class, Frieder Nake’s computer-generated piece stood out to me. While doing some research into algorithmic art, I discovered the work of Tom White, an artist and university lecturer in New Zealand. Though White uses algorithms in his work, he does not simply allowing the algorithms to run freely; he gives them a goal. The pieces look abstract to humans, but they are actually able to be recognized by a computer as certain objects (such as a fan, a pair of binoculars, or a cello). Though we may not be able to call an algorithm creative, I found it rather interesting that algorithms (in this case, machine learning as well) could be used as a creative medium.
