The days of the mid-2010’s “unnaturally straight eyebrows and red lip-tint” look are gone. Korean fashion and beauty is more pervasive than ever, and since their expansion into international markets, Korean beauty companies all share a similar format and feel to their celebrity-sponsored advertisements: clean, silky-smooth photo editing with dewy skin and mild color palettes. The current trend has now become an extreme version of one’s natural features. Baby-smooth skin, natural and polished eyebrows, and natural-brown contact lenses. The image above is perhaps the most generic image of a standard Korean skincare advertisement. The reality is that the human skin is realistically porous and spotted, and this form of photo editing is marketed to be the outcome of a multi-step expensive Korean skincare routine. While it is certainly not impossible to find someone with perfect skin and features on a daily basis, pictures posted on social media have become increasingly edited in the most subtle ways.
